You May Be Practicing Islam While Quietly Undoing It
All praise is due to Allah. And peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Final success belongs to the righteous, and there is no transgression except against the wrongdoers. As-Salaam Alaikum Wa Rah'matullahi Wa Barakaat'u! In the previous article, we established an essential foundation: Islam can be nullified not only by open rejection but by beliefs, words, and actions that contradict the Shahadah. Many people pray, many fast, many identify as Muslims. Yet some of them unknowingly fall into matters that quietly undo the very testimony they carry. Today, we will examine five major nullifiers that are widespread, normalized, and often committed without realizing their seriousness. This is not to accuse, it is to warn, and to protect what we claim to stand upon. The Second Nullifier: Taking Intermediaries Between Oneself and Allah This nullifier occurs when a person places intermediaries between himself and Allah, calling upon them, trusting them, or believing they draw him closer to Allah. Allah says: “And those who take protectors besides Him say: ‘We only worship them so that they may bring us closer to Allah.’” (Qur’an 39:3) This was the logic of the early mushrikin; they did not deny Allah’s existence, they claimed closeness through others. Calling upon saints, graves, righteous figures, or unseen beings for help in matters only Allah controls is not devotion. It is shirk. The heart must turn directly to Allah without barriers. The Third Nullifier: Not Declaring the Mushrikīn Disbelievers, or Doubting Their Disbelief Whoever does not declare those whom Allah and His Messenger declared disbelievers to be disbelievers, or doubts their disbelief, or considers their path valid, has nullified his Islam. Allah says: “Whoever seeks a religion other than Islam will never be accepted by him.” (Qur’an 3:85) This does not mean mistreating people; it means clarity in belief. Truth and falsehood cannot both be valid paths to Allah. Compassion does not require confusion. The Fourth Nullifier: Believing That Guidance Other Than the Prophet’s Guidance Is Better Whoever believes that laws, systems, or guidance other than what the Messenger ﷺ brought are superior, more complete, or more suitable than Islam has nullified his Shahādah. Allah says: “But no, by your Lord, they will not truly believe until they make you judge in all disputes between them.” (Qur’an 4:65) Preferring man-made systems over divine guidance is not progress; it is a rejection of the Messenger’s authority. That's why when you correct some people on their mistakes due to a lack of Islamic knowledge, you'll hear them saying, 'That was applicable in the time of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ; it's not suitable for these days, things have changed, and so on.' This contradicts the foundation of Islam and is among what nullifies it when held as a belief. Because Islam is not outdated, it is timeless. The same Qur'an used in those days is still used today. Nothing has tampered with it, nor will, as Allah says in Qur'an 15:9. “Surely We have revealed the Reminder (Qur'an), and We will most surely be its guardian.” (Surah Al-Hijr) The Fifth Nullifier: Hating Any Part of What the Messenger ﷺ Came With Whoever hates anything from the religion of the Prophet ﷺ, even if he practices it, has fallen into kufr. Allah says: “That is because they hated what Allah revealed, so He make their deeds (good deeds) worthless.” (Qur’an 47:9) Hatred here is not a struggle; it is resentment, disliking obligations, resenting commands, or despising rulings because they oppose desires, which is a danger to the heart. Obedience with hatred is not submission. The Sixth Nullifier: Mocking Any Part of the Deen, Its Reward, or Its Punishment Mockery of Allah, His verses, His Messenger ﷺ, or anything from the religion, like beard, cutting trousers before ankles, the veil of women, and so on, nullifies Islam. Allah says: “Is it Allah and His sign (verses) and His Messenger that you were mocking? Don't make any excuse; you have disbelieved after your belief.” (Qur’an 9:65–66) Mockery is not always laughter; sometimes it is sarcasm, dismissal, or sharing content casually. The Deen is not entertainment. A Necessary Reminder Studying these nullifiers is not about pointing fingers; it is about guarding the heart. Many fall into these matters while believing their faith is untouched; that is why knowledge here is mercy. Pause and reflect: Not about others, about yourself. What do we defend when pressured? What do we compromise when we are uncomfortable? What do we laugh at when we should be silent? These answers reveal what we truly stand upon. In the coming articles, In Shaa Allah, we will continue examining the remaining nullifiers, including those tied to allegiance, reliance, and turning away from the Deen altogether. These are not distant dangers; they live in everyday choices.
