You Could Lose Islam Without Saying “I Left It”

All praise is due to Allah. Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Final success belongs to the righteous, and there is no transgression except against the wrongdoers. As-Salaamualaikum Wa Rah'matullahi Wa Barakaat'u! We have already examined the first six major nullifiers of Islam Acts and beliefs that quietly undo the Shahadah while a person still prays, fasts, and calls himself Muslim. Many think Islam is lost by openly declaring apostasy.  The boundaries of the Deen are clear, and crossing them knowingly, even silently, can remove a person from Islam. Today, we complete the list with the remaining four nullifiers. These are not rare or theoretical; they appear in everyday choices, loyalties, and attitudes. We study them to protect ourselves, not to judge others. The Seventh Nullifier: Magic (Sihr), performing magic, learning it, teaching it, or believing it can benefit or harm independently of Allah, nullifies Islam. Allah says: “But they [the devils] do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah.” (Qur’an 2:102). And about the magicians of Firʿawn, Allah says: “So they cast down their ropes and rods and said, ‘By the might of Firʿawn, indeed we will be the prevailing ones.’” (Qur’an 26:44) Magic involves seeking help from jinn and devils, often through shirk, or the act of attributing false worship to a deity. The Prophet ﷺ counted it among the seven destructive sins: “Avoid the seven destructive sins… [including] magic.” (Sahih al Bukhari 2766, Sahih Muslim 89) Some visit fortune tellers, wear amulets believing they have power, or practice spells, thinking it is harmless. Major magic removes a person from Islam. The Eighth Nullifier: Supporting and Aiding the Polytheists Against the Muslims. This is to ally with, help, or support those who fight Islam and Muslims in belief, word, or action. Allah says: “O you who believed, do not make the Jews and the Christians as (your) allies. They are (in fact) allies of one another, and whoever is an ally to them among you, then indeed, he is (one) of them.” (Qur’an 5:51) The heart and actions must side with the believers. Supporting enemies of the Deen, militarily, politically, or by spreading their propaganda, while knowing their enmity toward Islam, is a nullifier. Loyalty belongs to Allah, His Messenger ﷺ, and the believers. The Ninth Nullifier: Believing That Some People Are Permitted to Go Outside the Shariah of Muhammad ﷺ. It is believed that certain individuals or groups may follow a law other than the Shariah, or are exempt from it. Allah says: “And whoever choses other than Islam as religion, never it will be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.” (Qur’an 3:85) Some claim that saints, leaders, or modern societies can abandon parts of the Shariah and still be guided; this nullifier rejects the finality of the Prophet’s message. No one, no matter how pious they appear, is above the law of Allah. The Tenth Nullifier: Turning Away from the Religion of Allah. Not Learning It and Not Acting Upon It This is complete indifference, refusing to learn the Deen and refusing to practice it. Allah says: “And who is more unjust than someone who is reminded of the verses of his Lord, then he turns away from them? Indeed, we, will give punishment to the guilty.” (Qur’an 32:22) It is not the one who struggles or sins occasionally, but rather the one who does not care, who hears the truth but turns their back completely. The Prophet ﷺ said: “By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, if you did not sin, Allah would replace you with people who would sin and then seek forgiveness, so He could forgive them.” (Sahih Muslim 2749) Struggling believers are not meant here, but deliberate, total turning away is a nullifier. Pause and reflect. Not about others, about ourselves. Do any of these four touch our lives, even slightly?  Do we seek help through forbidden means? Do our loyalties ever shift away from the believers? Do we think anyone is above the Shariah? Or have we grown indifferent to learning and living the Deen? These nullifiers complete the list, but the list is not the end, and In Shaa Allah, we will be treating others through the newsletter and future contents. It is a mercy. A map to protect the greatest gift we have, our Shahadah. In our next article, In Shaa Allah, we will conclude this series by discussing how to return if one has fallen into any nullifier, and how to safeguard our Islam every single day. If you have any feedback, send us an email: support@nurquest.com May Allah protect our Shahadah from every nullifier, guide us to sincere repentance, and make us firm upon the truth until we meet Him.
