You Carry the Shahadah — Do You Know What Can Break It?
All praise is due to Allah. Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. Final success belongs to the righteous, and there is no transgression except against the wrongdoers. As-Salaamualaikum Wa Rah'matullahi Wa Barakaat'u! Introduction to the Nawaaqidul-Islam (What Can Nullify a Person’s Islam). Why This Topic Is Necessary, Not Optional After understanding the Shahādah, its meaning, and its conditions, a critical question remains: How can something so great be lost? Many assume that once a person enters Islam, nothing can remove it except openly leaving the religion. This assumption is dangerous. Islam is not nullified only by rejection. It can also be nullified by words, beliefs, actions, or attitudes that contradict the very Shahādah we claim to uphold. The scholars of Ahl al-Sunnah did not discuss the nullifiers to frighten people away from Islam, but to protect their Islam. Knowing what breaks wudu' and Salah does not make a person impure. It helps him remain pure. Likewise, knowing what nullifies Islam is part of preserving Iman. Ignorance here is not safe. The Connection Between Shahadah and Nawaaqid Everything that nullifies Islam traces back to one of the two testimonies: • Laa ilaha illallah’ • Muhammadur-Rasulullah ﷺ Any belief, statement, or action that: • contradicts worshipping Allah alone • or rejects, mocks, opposes, or bypasses the Messenger ﷺ It is a threat to the Shahadah. This is why we emphasized earlier that the Shahadah is not a slogan. It is a contract. When that contract is violated at its foundation, the Shahadah itself is affected. Some nullifiers oppose Allah’s right. Others oppose the Messenger’s authority. Some oppose both. Understanding this connection prevents confusion and emotional reactions later. A Critical Clarification Before We Continue Discussing nullifiers does not mean: • declaring Muslims disbelievers carelessly • searching for people’s faults • applying rulings without knowledge or authority Ahl al-Sunnah distinguish between: An act that is kufr, and Declaring a specific person a disbeliever This series is about knowledge, not verdicts. It is about self-protection, not judgment of others. Many of the nullifiers we will study are widespread, normalized, and committed without realizing their seriousness. That is exactly why they must be studied carefully, calmly, and with humility. Now that we understand why this topic matters, how it connects to the Shahadah, and how it must be approached, we are ready to begin, we will examine the first of the major nullifiers, one that directly contradicts the foundation of Laa Ilaha illallah’, and one that many fall into while believing their faith is untouched, these nullifiers are hidden in everyday words, attitudes, and choices. We will examine them one by one, slowly and carefully, so we can recognize them and protect ourselves with Kitaab (Qur'an) and Sunnah (Hadith). Allah says: “And whoever that's not judging by what Allah has revealed, then it is those who are the disbelievers.” (Qur’an 5:44) Narrated Ik’rima from Ibn Abas: The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever changes his religion, kill him.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6922) . These texts show that Islam has boundaries. Crossing them knowingly takes a person out of the fold. The scholars did not invent these nullifiers. They gathered them from clear evidence in the Qur’an and Sunnah. Our goal is not to accuse anyone, but to clear what is not clear to most people practicing Islam without knowing fully what they stand upon and what can fall and destroy it. And to warn ourselves and protect our Shahadah. The First Nullifier: Shirk in the Worship of Allah: The greatest and most dangerous nullifier is associating partners with Allah in worship. Allah says: “Indeed, Allah will not forgive associating partners with Him, but He forgives what is less than (little sins) that for whom He wills.” (Qur’an 4:48) Shirk is to direct any act of worship, like dua, sacrifice, vow, fear, hope, trust, or seeking help, to anything other than Allah. Examples include: Calling upon the dead or absent for help in matters only Allah controls. Sacrificing animals in the name of saints or jinn. Swearing by others than Allah while believing it has power. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever dies while calling upon other than Allah as a rival will enter the Fire.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 4497) Many do this, thinking it is minor or cultural. But major shirk removes a person from Islam. In the next part, in Shaa Allah, we will examine the other part of the major nullifiers, one that directly contradicts the foundation of Laa Ilaaha Illa Allah, and one that many fall into while believing their faith is untouched.
