What “Islam” Really Means — Straight from the Prophet ﷺ

It began with a single question—one that arrived quietly in an Ith'nayn Aqeedah newsletter, yet carried the weight of eternity. What if we claim to follow this Deen, yet unknowingly mix it with beliefs that Allah never revealed and the Prophet ﷺ never taught? This was not a question you could answer with emotion. Culture would not suffice. Assumptions would crumble under its weight. Only revelation could answer it. Consider how many people say those three words: " I am Muslim ." But ask them what Islam actually  means , and watch the answers scatter like leaves in wind. "It's about praying," says one. "It's my family's tradition," says another. "As long as my heart is clean, that's what matters," insists a third. Yet Allah did not leave Islam undefined. The Messenger ﷺ did not abandon it to interpretation. Islam was explained clearly, publicly, and completely—in one hadith that scholars have called the summary of the entire Deen. The Hadith of Jibril( Sahih Muslim 8 ). When the Malak Came to Teach Picture the scene: The Prophet ﷺ sat among his companions when a man appeared—a stranger with clothes impossibly white, hair impossibly black, bearing no trace of travel though no one recognized him. He sat before the Prophet ﷺ, knee to knee, and began to ask. When it was over, and the mysterious visitor had departed, the Prophet ﷺ turned to his companions with words that still echo across centuries: " That was Jibril. He came to teach you your Deen. " Not to entertain. Not to mystify. To  teach . Why Revelation Defines the Deen The Deen of Allah is not something humans invent. It bends to no era, shifts for no culture, yields to no personal preference. Allah declared in Surah Al-Ma'idah(Q5v3): " Today I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. " A perfected Deen needs no additions. It accepts no subtractions. ʿAli ibn Abi Ṭalib رضي الله عنه understood this deeply. He once said: "If religion were based on personal opinion, I would have washed the bottom of my leather socks instead of wiping over them, but since religion is based on the Book and the Sunnah, I wiped over the top." (Sunan Abi Dawud 162, and Daraqutni, Hadith Number: 2382 (depending on the edition; in Dar al-Kutub al-‘Ilmiyya edition)) The meaning of Deen is not learned from upbringing alone. Not from scholars' opinions. It is learned from Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. What Islam Actually Means The word itself comes from submission. Surrender. In the Shariah, Islam means submitting outwardly to Allah through obedience, worship, and compliance with His commands. This is precisely why the Prophet ﷺ explained Islam through  actions : Testifying. Praying. Giving. Fasting. Performing the pilgrimage. Islam is not merely something felt in the heart. It is something  lived  through obedience. A person does not define Islam. Islam defines the person. The Quiet Danger Here is what few realize: the greatest danger today is not rejecting Islam openly. It is redefining it quietly. "Islam is just having good intentions."  Yet the Prophet ﷺ defined it with clear actions. "Islam is my culture, my heritage."  Yet the companions came from different tribes and distant lands, united only by submission. "Islam is whatever feels right."  Yet revelation came to guide feelings, not follow them. "Islam is belief without obedience."  Yet the Prophet ﷺ described Islam as something practiced. These misconceptions seep in slowly. They blur the lines. They open doors to mixing truth with falsehood. That is why returning to how the Prophet ﷺ defined Islam is not optional. It is necessary. A Moment to Pause Before you continue with your day, sit with these questions: Did I know this Deen the way the Prophet ﷺ explained it? Or do I know Islam only through what I grew up seeing? If someone asked me to define Islam, would my answer match the answer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the Hadith of Jibril? Take time this week to reread that hadith. Memorize it, and it will be your light in days to come. It is short, yet it carries the entire Deen. What Comes Next This was only the beginning. In the next article, In Shaa Allah we will break down Islam step by step, starting with the first two pillars: the Shahadah and the Salah. And we will ask another serious question: What happens if the very pillars that hold up our Islam are misunderstood, neglected, or reduced to mere words and routines? That is where the real test begins. In Shaa Allah. If you have any feedback, send us an email (T&Cs apply): support@nurquest.com
