What Does NOT Break the Fast Clearing Ramadan Doubts That Ruin Worship
All praise is due to Allah. Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Ignorance during worship creates anxiety. Knowledge brings certainty. Many Muslims break their fast in Ramadan over things Allah never prohibited. After learning what nullifies the fast, it is equally obligatory to know what does not nullify it. Because doubting constantly can destroy khushu and even lead people to abandon worship. This blog clarifies matters that do not break the fast, exposes common Ramadan myths, and teaches how to protect your fasting from was'was (doubtful). Matters That Do NOT Break the Fast 1. Eating or Drinking Out of Forgetfulness If a fasting person eats or drinks forgetfully, his fast remains valid. Evidence is the narration of Abu Huraira that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever eats or drinks forgetfully while fasting, he should complete his fast, for it was Allah who fed him and gave him drink.” (Sahih al Bukhari 1933, Sahih Muslim 1155) No making up, no sin, no doubt. 2. Unintentional Vomiting Vomiting without intention does not break the fast. Evidence is the narration of Abu Huraira that: The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever has a sudden attack of vomiting while fasting, he does not have to make up the fast.” (Sunan Abi Dawud 2380. Hasan) Only intentional vomiting invalidates the fast. 3. Wet Dreams If a person experiences a wet dream during the day of Ramadan, the fast is valid. Because it occurs without choice. Islam does not punish the servant for what he does not control. Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Allah has raised a pen (not to write their evil deeds) for three (types of people), someone who's sleeping until He/She wakes up…. (Sunan Abi Dawud 4398) 4. Swallowing Saliva Normal saliva does not break the fast. This includes saliva that naturally gathers in the mouth. Islam is not built on hardship. No evidence that it spoiled fasting. 5. Brushing Teeth or Using a Siwak Using a siwak or brushing the teeth does not invalidate fasting, as long as nothing is swallowed intentionally. The Prophet ﷺ used siwak while fasting. (Sunan Abi Dawud 2364) The dislike some scholars mentioned after midday is caution, not prohibition. 7. Injections That Are Not Nutritional Non-nutritional injections, blood tests, and medical procedures do not break the fast. Because they are not food or drink, and do not replace them. Common Ramadan Myths That Confuse People Myth 1 Swallowing mucus breaks the fast. False. It is disliked, but does not invalidate fasting. Myth 2 Using perfume or smelling incense breaks the fast. False. Smelling does not equal eating. Myth 3 Bleeding breaks the fast. False. Blood tests, wounds, and nosebleeds do not break the fast. Myth 4 Thinking about food invalidates fasting. False. Fasting is not thought control. It is action and intention. How to Protect Your Faith From Doubts Learn the rulings before Ramadan. Ignore whispers that have no evidence Do not repeat worship due to baseless fear Follow the Quran and Sunnah, not social media opinions Remember Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity The Prophet ﷺ warned against excessiveness in Deen (Religion). (Sahih Bukhari 39) Certainty is not removed by doubt. Pause and Reflect: How many days have you broken mentally but not physically How many acts of worship were burdened by ignorance How many people worship Allah with fear? He never commanded Knowledge is mercy. In the next article, In Shaa Allah, we will address the intentional violations done in ignorance, whether repentance alone is enough, and how to repair a damaged Ramadan.
