What Breaks the Fast: Nullifiers of Ramadan According to the Sunnah

What Breaks the Fast: Nullifiers of Ramadan According to the Sunnah All praise is due to Allah. Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.  Fasting is worship with limits set by revelation, crossing those limits has consequences, not emotions.  After understanding the pillars of fasting, it becomes obligatory to know what destroys it. The nullifiers of fasting fall into two clear categories. One requires kafarah with repentance, the other requires making up the day only. Confusing these two leads to major mistakes every Ramadan. First Category Nullifiers That Require Kafarah: This applies to one act only, by evidence from Sunnah. 1. Sexual Intercourse During the Day of Ramadan Whoever has sexual intercourse with his spouse intentionally during the fasting hours of Ramadan has committed the gravest violation of fasting. Evidence Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه reported: A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, I am destroyed O Messenger of Allah. He ﷺ said: “What destroyed you”? He said, I had intercourse with my wife while fasting. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Can you free a slave”? He said, No. He ﷺ said: “Can you fast for two consecutive months”? He said, No. He ﷺ said: “Can you feed sixty poor people”? He said, No.  (Sahih al-Bukhari 1936, 1937, 2600, Sahih Muslim 1111) What Is Required Three matters are obligatory: Repentance to Allah Making up the missed day Kafarah in the following order Freeing a believing slave  If unable, fasting two consecutive months without breaking (If unable), feeding sixty poor people This ruling applies only to intentional intercourse.  No other nullifier carries kafārah. Second Category: Nullifiers That Require Making Up the Fast Only These invalidate the fast but do not require kafārah. 1. Eating or Drinking Intentionally Whoever eats or drinks deliberately after Fajr has invalidated his fast. Evidence Allah says Qur'an 2:187 “And eat and drink until the white of dawn becomes clear to you from the black of night. Then complete the fast until night.” (Surah al Baqarah) What Is Required Repentance  Making up one day after Ramadan  No kafārah is required. 2. Intentional Vomiting Narrated Abu Huraira that the Prophet ﷺ said: Whoever vomits unintentionally does not have to make up the fast, but whoever vomits intentionally must make it up. (Abu Dawud 2380, Tirmidhi 720) Graded authentic. 3. Menstruation and Postnatal Bleeding If a woman begins menstruation or postnatal bleeding, even moments before sunset, the fast becomes invalid. Evidence Aishah رضي الله عنها said: We used to menstruate during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and we were ordered to make up the fast but not the prayer. (Sahih al-Bukhari 321, Sahih Muslim 335)  4. Ejaculation Due to Desire Ejaculation caused intentionally through physical contact or stimulation invalidates the fast. Not different from sexual intercourse. This does not include wet dreams. 5. Apostasy Leaving Islam nullifies all acts of worship, including fasting. Allah says in Qur'an 39:65: If you associate others with Allah, your deeds will surely be nullified. (Surah az Zumar ) 6. Firm Intention to Break the Fast If a person firmly decides to break his fast, the fast is invalid even if nothing is eaten. Because fasting stands on intention before abstention. Important Clarifications Forgetting and eating does not break the fast. Narrated Abu Huraira that the Prophet ﷺ said: Whoever forgets and eats or drinks, let him complete his fast, for it was Allah who fed him and gave him drink. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1933, Sahih Muslim 1155) Mistakes and coercion do not invalidate fasting.  Allah does not hold the servant accountable for what is beyond his control. Pause and Reflect: How many Muslims fast without knowing what destroys it? How many invalidate days and never make them up? How many follow habits but abandon knowledge? Worship without knowledge leads to loss, not reward.
