This One Gap Can Invalidate Your Worship Without You Realizing
All praise is due to Allah. Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Final success belongs to the righteous, and there is no transgression except against the wrongdoers. As-Salaam Alaikum Wa Rah’matullahi Wa Barakaatuh! A Note Before You Read: You have now covered two foundations. Knowing your Lord. Knowing your religion. Now comes what completes them. Because knowing Allah is not enough on its own. Knowing Islam is not enough on its own. You must know how it was lived. The Third Principle: Knowing Your Prophet ﷺ This is not knowing his name. Not knowing his lineage only. It is knowing him in a way that allows you to follow him. Because Islam is not self-defined. It is (رسول) Messenger-based. Allah says: Qur’an 33:21 “You have in the Messenger of Allah ﷺ an excellent example…” (Surah Al-Ahzab) So the question becomes: Do you know that example? Who Is Your Prophet? He is Muhammad ibn Abdullah ﷺ, from Quraysh, born in Makkah. He lived 40 years before the Revelation. Then received revelation, called to Tawheed for 23 years. 13 years in Makkah, and 10 years in Madinah. Then he passed away. This is the starting point, but not the goal. Why Knowing Him Is Obligatory Because you cannot obey someone you do not know. Allah says: Qur’an 4:59 “O you who believe, obey Allah and obey the Messenger…” (Surah An-Nisa) And: Qur’an 4:80 “Whoever obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah…” (Surah An-Nisa) So obedience to the Prophet ﷺ is not separate. It is part of obedience to Allah. If you claim to follow Islam, but you do not know how the Prophet ﷺ practiced it, then what are you following? What Does It Mean to Know the Prophet ﷺ? It includes three things: 1. Knowing His Message He came with Tawheed, calling people to worship Allah alone, and rejecting shirk in all forms. Allah says: Qur’an 21:25 “We did not send any messenger before you except that We revealed to him: There is no deity except Me, so worship Me.” (Surah Al-Anbiya) This was his mission. Clear and direct. 2. Knowing His Sunnah How did he pray? How did he fast? How did he perform Hajj? Narrated Malik that He ﷺ said: “Pray as you have seen me pray.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 631) And: In Jabir's narration, He ﷺ said: “Take from me your rites.” (Sahih Muslim 1297) So عبادات (worship) were not invented; they are followed. Every detail matters. 3. Knowing His Path and Struggle He was opposed. Rejected. Harmed. Yet he remained firm. Allah says: Qur’an 68:4 “And indeed, you are upon an عظیم (best standard of) character.” (Surah Al-Qalam) You learn: How he dealt with hardship. How he dealt with people. How he remained patient. This is not history. It is an instruction. Where Many Go Wrong They claim love. But do not follow. They celebrate his name. But ignore his Sunnah. They say: “We love the Prophet ﷺ.” But when his guidance reaches them, they hesitate. Allah says: Qur’an 3:31 “Say, if you love Allah, then follow me. Allah will love you…” (Surah Aal-e-Imran) Love is proven by following, not by words. The Danger of Ignoring This Principle A person may know Allah, know Islam, but if he does not follow the Prophet ﷺ correctly, his actions are at risk. Aisha narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever does an action not in accordance with our matter, it will be rejected.” (Sahih Muslim 1718) So sincerity alone is not enough. The following is required. What This Principle Requires From You You must: Learn his Sunnah Follow it in your عبادات (worship) Follow it in your daily life. Give it priority over opinions. Not blindly. With understanding. This is how the Companions lived. The Link to the Grave You will be asked: Who is your Prophet? Not: What did you memorize? But: Who did you follow? That answer is built now. Pause and Reflect: Ask yourself: Do I know how the Prophet ﷺ worshipped? Or do I follow what I found people doing? When his Sunnah reaches me, do I submit? Or do I delay? Do I truly follow him? Or do I only claim it? Because this principle is the final piece. Without it, the path is unclear. With it: Everything connects. What Comes Next Now the three principles are complete: Knowing your Lord Knowing your religion Knowing your Prophet ﷺ But knowing is not the end. You must be able to answer. With certainty. With evidence. In the next article, in shaa Allah, we will bring all three together, how they are asked in the grave, and how a person answers them correctly.
