The One Pillar That Can Make or Break Your Entire Islam
All praise is due to Allah. Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Final success belongs to the righteous, and there is no transgression except against the wrongdoers. As-Salaamualaikum Wa Rah'matullahi Wa Barakaat'u! Introduction to Salah: Meaning (in Language): Salah means Prayer. As Allah says in the Qur'an 9:103. “Take alms out of their property, you would cleanse them and purify them thereby, and pray (He used “Salah”) for them; surely your prayer is a relief to them; and Allah is Hearing, Knowing.” (Surah At-Taubah). Meaning (in Shari'a): Worshipping Allah with words, actions practically explained by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that starts with At-Tak’beer (Allahu Ak’bar), and ends with At-Tas’leem (As-Salaamu Alaikum Wa Rah'matullahi Wa Barakaat'u). Islam is not built on claims; it is built on pillars that either stand firm or collapse. Among them, Salah is not a supporting detail; it is the pillar that holds the entire structure upright. When Salah stands, Islam stands; when it falls, everything that rests upon it is exposed to ruin. Salah was not legislated casually; it was not revealed gradually, like other obligations. It was imposed above the seven heavens, directly, without an intermediary, on the night of al-Israʾ wa al-Miʿraj. This alone distinguishes Salah from every other act of worship. It is the daily meeting between the servant and his Lord, not symbolic, not optional, not cultural. It is submission in its purest form. The Ruling of Salah (Compulsion): Salah is obligatory upon every accountable Muslim. There is no difference of opinion regarding its obligation. Allah says Qur’an 2:43. “And establish the prayer and give Zakah and bow with those who bow.” (Al-Baqara) And Allah says in the Qur'an 4:103. “Surely prayer is a timed ordinance for the believers.” (Surah An-Nisa) The command is clear, continuous, and repeated throughout the Qur’an. The Prophet ﷺ said in the Hadith narrated on the authority of Jabir: “Between a man and shirk and kufr is the abandonment of prayer.” (Sahih Muslim:82) This is not a language of encouragement. It is a language of warning. Salah should not be abandoned due to weakness alone; persistent abandonment reflects indifference toward the command of Allah, which is why the scholars spoke severely about leaving it, whether out of denial or neglect. Excuses do not remove obligation, travel has concessions, illness has concessions, fear has concessions, but abandonment has none. Position of Salah: Salah is one of the most affirmed obligatory parts of Islam, it's the next after Shahadah, if we go back to the Hadith Jubril that we have brought in the previous contents and newsletter. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also affirmed it in the Hadith that was reported on the authority of Ibn 'Abbas that Mu'adh said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sent me to Yemen, and (at the time of departure) instructed me that: You are coming into a community of the people of the Book, so (your mission is to) first call them to testify that there is no deity but Allah, that I (Muhammad ﷺ) am the messenger of Allah, and if they accept this, then tell them Allah has enjoined five prayers upon them during the day and the night. (Sahih Muslim 19) And on this, whoever opposes its compulsion will become an unbeliever who has left his Deen (religion), as it was stated in the Hadith mentioned before (Sahih Muslim:82). And there's no dispute on that among scholars. Salah remains binding as long as the soul remains in the body. Salah is not a habit inherited; it is a covenant renewed daily. In the coming sections, In Shaa Allah, we will explore how much Salah is obligated on Muslims, the importance of Salah, and how it saves Iman, because no matter what else a person claims, Salah reveals the truth.
