The Mistakes That Steal the Reward of Your Salah And How to Revive True Khushu That Brings the Heart Back to Life

All praise is due to Allah. Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Final success belongs to the righteous, and there is no transgression except against the wrongdoers. As-Salaamualaikum Wa Rah'matullahi Wa Barakaat'u! You pray five times a day.  You stand, bow, and prostrate.  You recite the words and complete the movements. But when the prayer ends, does your heart feel lighter Or do you walk away unchanged? Many Muslims pray correctly in form, yet leave the prayer with little reward. Not because the Salah is invalid, but because certain mistakes quietly drain its light and rob the heart of presence. Today, we will uncover the mistakes that reduce the reward of Salah without nullifying it, and how to revive true khushu that makes Salah alive again. Mistakes That Reduce the Reward of Salah These do not break the prayer, but they weaken its impact and barakah.  Rushing Through the Prayer:  Moving quickly through rukūʿ, sujūd, and standing without tranquility. The Prophet ﷺ said to a man who rushed his prayer: “Go back and pray, for you have not prayed.” (Sahih al Bukhari 793) Hadith narrated by Abu Huraira.  Even when the prayer counts, rushing steals its reward. 2. Lack of Presence in Recitation Reciting Al-Fatiha and other verses without focus, understanding, or attentiveness. The Prophet ﷺ said: “There is no prayer for the one who does not recite the Opening of the Book.” (Sahih al Bukhari 756) Ubadah Bin As-Samit narrated the hadith.  The tongue moves, but the heart remains absent. 3. Looking Around or Upward Letting the eyes wander during Salah. The Prophet ﷺ warned in the Hadith Narrated by Anas Bi Malik: “What is wrong with people who raise their eyes to the sky in prayer? Let them stop, or their eyesight will be snatched away.” (Sahih al Bukhari 750) The gaze reveals the state of the heart. 4. Excessive Fidgeting Playing with clothing, interlocking fingers, or making unnecessary movements. Abu Dhar Al-Ghifari narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: “No one should pray while interlocking his fingers.” (Sahih Muslim 539) Stillness strengthens presence. 5. Praying While Distracted by Physical Needs Praying while hungry or holding the urge to relieve oneself. Aisha narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: “No prayer is performed when food is present or when one is prompted by the call of nature.” (Sahih Muslim 560) A distracted body weakens the heart. 6. Yawning Without Restraint Yawning openly in prayer without suppressing it. Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: “When one of you yawns, let him suppress it as much as possible.” (Sahih Muslim 2995) Reverence is reflected even in small actions. How to Build True Khushu That Revives the Heart Khushu is not a personality. It is training, awareness, and struggle. Narrated Umar Bin Khattab that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Worship Allah as if you see Him, for if you do not see Him, He sees you.” (Sahih Muslim 8) 1. Prepare Before Takbir Perform wudu calmly. Choose a quiet place. Remind yourself that you are about to stand before Allah. 2. Understand What You Recite Learn the meaning of Al Fatihah and the common supplications. Let the heart follow the tongue. 5. Fix the Gaze Look at the place of Sujud. ʿAʾishah رضي الله عنها reported that the Prophet ﷺ lowered his gaze in prayer. (Sunan An Nasaai 1135, Sahih) 6. Slow Down Intentionally Remain still until every bone settles. The Prophet ﷺ said: “When you bow, place your palms on your knees and remain still until every bone returns to its place.” (Sunan Ibn Majah 874, Sahih) 7. Fight Distractions Actively When whispers come, seek refuge with Allah and continue. (Muslim 2203) 8. Increase Sunnah and Voluntary Prayers Voluntary prayers soften the heart and strengthen khushu in obligatory Salah. Allah says in a Hadith Qudsi: “My servant continues to draw near to Me with voluntary deeds until I love him.” (Sahih al Bukhari 6502) 9. Ask Allah for Khushu The Prophet ﷺ used to say: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from a heart that is not humble.” (Sunan at Tirmidhi 3492, Hasan) Pause and Reflect Is your Salah alive or routine?  Is your body standing while your heart wanders  If your Salah was presented today, would it speak for you or against you Khushu is not a gift for a few It is a struggle open to all who seek it sincerely. Start today. Pray one Salah slowly. With awareness. As if it is your final meeting with Allah. In the next article, In Shaa Allah, we will proceed to the 3rd pillar, which is fasting in Ramadan.
