The First Pillar of Islam The Shahadah That Enters a Person into the Deen
All praise is due to Allah. Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. Final success is for the righteous, and there is no aggression except against the wrongdoers. As Salaam Alaikum Wa Rah'matullahi Wa Barakaat'u! In our last article, we paused with a serious question. What happens if the very pillars that hold up our Islam are misunderstood, neglected, or reduced to mere words and routines? That is where the real test begins. Today, we begin with the first and most important pillar. The Shahadah. We cannot move forward in understanding Islam until this pillar is understood correctly. Everything else stands upon it. Introduction to the Shahadah When the Prophet ﷺ explained Islam in the Hadith of Jubril (Sahih Muslim 8), he began with one statement: “To testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allah.” This testimony is called the Shahadah. It is the first statement a person utters when entering Islam. It is often the last statement a believer hopes to leave this world with. It is the door opener to Islam and the key to Paradise. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever says ‘Laa ilaha illallah’ and go against everything worshipped other than Allah, his wealth and blood become protected, and his account is with Allah.” (Sahih Muslim 23) However, merely uttering these words is not sufficient if they are not understood and lived by. Meaning of the Shahadah The word Shahadah means testimony. It is to testify with knowledge, certainty, and truthfulness to something known to be true. In the Shariah, the Shahadah means to believe with the heart, testify with the tongue, and submit with actions that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and that Muhammad ﷺ is His Messenger. This is not poetry or symbolism. It is a binding declaration. Whoever fulfills it correctly enters Islam. Whoever contradicts it nullifies their claim. Whoever establishes it properly has laid the foundation of the Deen. Kalimat ash-Shahadah The Shahādah consists of two inseparable parts: Laa ilaha illa Allah Muhammad Rasulullah The first part negates all false objects of worship and affirms worship for Allah alone. The second part affirms that worship must only be performed according to the guidance of the Messenger ﷺ. For this reason, Allah says: “Whoever obeys the Messenger has indeed obeyed Allah.” Qur’an 4:80 One of the Salaf scholars, Imam al-Awza'i رحمه الله, said: “The Sunnah is Islam, and Islam is the Sunnah.” (Sharḥ Uṣūl Iʿtiqād Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jamāʿah, al-Lālikāʾī, 1/152) Worshipping Allah without following the Messenger ﷺ is rejected. Claiming to follow the Messenger ﷺ while directing worship to others besides Allah is shirk. For this reason, Allah consistently links obedience to Him with obedience to His Messenger. The Conditions of the Shahadah The scholars of Ahl al-Sunnah clarified that the Shahadah is only valid when specific conditions are fulfilled. Without them, the words alone do not benefit. These conditions are seven. Some scholars mention an eighth. Knowledge (al-ʿIlm) - that removes ignorance Certainty (al-Yaqin) - that removes doubt Acceptance (al-Qabul) - that removes rejection Submission (al-Inqiyad) - that removes abandonment Sincerity (al-Ikhlas) - that removes hypocrisy Truthfulness (as-Sidq) - that removes lying Love (al-Mahabbah) - that removes hatred for it Some add rejection of everything worshipped besides Allah; if even one of these is absent, the Shahadah is incomplete. Today, we begin with the first condition, because without it, everything else collapses. Knowledge That Removes Ignorance: The Shahadah must be spoken with knowledge. Allah says: “So know that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah.” Qur’an 47:19 Knowledge precedes speech. A person must know what they are negating and what they are affirming. The Prophet ﷺ began with knowledge because no one can truthfully testify to what they do not understand. Many people utter the Shahadah while remaining ignorant of its meaning, its obligations, and what it makes forbidden. Some believe it is merely a phrase for entering Islam or for funerals. The companions did not accept the Shahadah from anyone until they were certain the person understood. If a person says “Laa Ilaaha Illa Allah” while ignorant of its meaning, the first condition has not been fulfilled. Knowledge includes: Knowing that Allah alone deserves worship Knowing what worship truly is Knowing that all other objects of worship are false Knowing that Muhammad ﷺ is the final Messenger and what following him requires Without this knowledge, the Shahadah is nothing more than sounds on the tongue. Pause and reflect: Do we truly understand the words we repeat daily in our prayers? Or have we grown accustomed to pronouncing them without comprehension? This is the beginning of correcting our foundation. In the next article, we will examine the second condition, Certainty al-Yaqin, which removes doubt. Many people pronounce the Shahadah while their hearts remain unsettled regarding Allah, the Messenger ﷺ, or the message itself. What are the consequences of that, and how is the Shahadah protected from doubt? We will address this next, In Shaa Allah. If you have any feedback, send us an email (T&Cs apply): support@nurquest.com
