The 4 Things You Must Have to Understand Islam and Practice It Perfectly Easily
From the Introduction of Uthuluth-Thalaatha by Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab All praise is due to Allah. Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Final success belongs to the righteous, and there is no transgression except against the wrongdoers. As-Salaam Alaikum Wa Rah'matullahi Wa Barakaat'u! A Note Before You Read: In previous articles, we covered the pillars of Iman, the perfection of worship through Ihsan, guarding against doubtful matters, and the danger of preferring human verdicts over the clear command of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. These topics all rest upon a solid foundation. Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab (rahimahullah) begins his famous treatise Uthuluth-Thalaatha (The Three Fundamental Principles) by pointing to four essential matters that every Muslim, male and female, must learn and act upon. These four things simplify the religion, protect it from confusion, and help a person understand Islam correctly and practice it in the best way. They are not complicated theories. They are the practical keys to success in this life and the next. Read carefully. The Four Essential Matters Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab (rahimahullah) said: “Know, may Allah have mercy upon you, that it is obligatory upon us to learn four matters.” These four are the foundation for every Muslim who wants clarity in belief and excellence in action: Knowledge This means knowing Allah, knowing His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and knowing the religion of Islam with its evidences from the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah. Knowledge comes first because actions without correct knowledge can lead to error or even shirk. The Prophet ﷺ taught that we will be questioned in the grave about our Lord, our religion, and our Prophet. Without this knowledge, how can we answer? Acting upon the Knowledge Knowledge alone is not enough. You must implement what you learn. True knowledge settles in the heart and appears on the limbs; it changes how you worship, how you deal with people, and how you live daily. Allah says in the Qur'an 47:19: “Know that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and ask forgiveness of your Lord for your sins.” (Surah Muhammad) He mentioned knowledge before action. Calling to It (Da’wah) After learning and acting, you must share this knowledge with others, starting with your family, then those around you. This is part of enjoining good and forbidding evil. The religion is not complete with private practice alone; it calls us to invite others to the straight path with wisdom and good admonition. Patience upon the Harm that Comes with It Whoever calls to the truth and acts upon it will face trials, opposition, or difficulty. You must remain patient and steadfast. The proof is in Qur'an 103:1-3: “(Allah) By time (of Asri), mankind is at a loss, except those who believe and do righteous deeds, and enjoin one another upon the truth, and enjoin one another upon patience.” (Surah al-Asr) Imam ash-Shafi’i (rahimahullah) said that if Allah had not revealed any other surah besides al-Asr, it would have been sufficient as proof for creation. Why These Four Things Make Understanding and Practicing Islam Easy They remove confusion: Many Muslims feel lost because they jump into details without these foundations. These four matters give you the big picture first. You claim to believe in Allah, did you know Him? You must know who you believe. They protect from deviation: Knowledge prevents blind following or mixing truth with falsehood. Action prevents hypocrisy. Da’wah spreads the light. Patience keeps you firm when tested. They lead to perfection: When combined with Ihsan (worshipping Allah as though you see Him), these four turn ordinary practice into excellent, accepted worship. They prepare you for the grave: The questions in the grave are about your Lord, your Prophet, and your religion. These four matters equip you to answer with certainty. The Imam wrote this short treatise so that every Muslim, even a common person, could learn the basics of Tawhid and the religion with clear evidence. It is not for scholars only. It is for you and me. Pause and Reflect: Ask yourself honestly: Do I have sound knowledge of Allah, His Messenger ﷺ, and the religion with proofs, or do I rely only on what I heard from others? Am I acting upon what I know, or is my knowledge only on my tongue? Am I calling others to this truth in my own circle, even if only by good example? When difficulties or opposition come because of my commitment to the truth, do I remain patient, or do I weaken? These four matters are the path to understanding Islam easily and practicing it perfectly with clarity, sincerity, and steadfastness. In the coming articles, In Shaa Allah, we will go deeper into each of these four matters and begin explaining the Three Fundamental Principles themselves: knowing your Lord, knowing your religion, and knowing your Prophet ﷺ.
