Is Your Shahadah Complete? The Conditions Many Overlook

Parts of Conditions of the Shahādah: Conditions Two to Four All praise is due to Allah. Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. Final success is for the righteous, and there is no aggression except against the wrongdoers. As-Salaam Alaikum Wa Rah'matullahi Wa Barakaat'u! In our previous article, we began examining the conditions of  “Laa Ilaaha Illa Allah.” We saw that the first condition is Knowledge ( al ʿIlm ) that removes ignorance. Without understanding the meaning, obligations, and prohibitions of the Shahādah, the testimony remains incomplete. Today, we continue with the next three conditions in sequence. Certainty (al Yaqin) The Second Condition of the Shahadah: Certainty, is a condition that many people overlook. Allah commands certainty in the strongest terms: “True believers are those who have faith in Allah and His Messenger, hold no doubts after knowing the truth, and dedicate their wealth and lives in Allah’s cause. These are the ones who are truthful."  (Qur’an 49:15)  The Shahadah must be pronounced with full conviction in the heart. There must be no trace of doubt about Allah’s oneness, His sole right to worship, or the messengership of prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and whoever doubts it will become an unbeliever after clear explanation with reverence, that's why Allah says in (Qur'an 4:115.) “Whoever goes against the Messenger after the true guidance has been made clear to them, and chooses a direction other than the path of the believers, Allah will leave them to follow their chosen path and they will enter Hell, a terrible destination.”  (Surah An-Nisa).  Narrated Abdullah bin Umar: The Prophet ﷺ said: “A man may be doing the deeds of people of (hell) fire, until what remain between him and it (fire) is the distance of a cubit, and what has been written (by Allah) will supasses and he will start doing the deeds of the people of Jannah, and he will enter paradise. And also a man can be doing the deeds of people of Jannah until what remain between him and it (Jannah) is the distance of a cubit, and what has been written will surpasses him and he will start doing the deeds of the people of hell and he will enter hell."   (Sahih al Bukhari 3332) Doubt can enter in many forms. Questioning the truth of the message. Hesitating about the finality of prophethood. Wondering if other paths might also lead to salvation. Even a small amount of doubt destroys certainty. Imam Ibn Qayyim al Jawziyyah رحمه الله said: “Certainty is the soul of faith. If doubt enters, faith weakens, and if doubt dominates, faith disappears.”  (Madārij as Sālikīn 2/153) The companions lived with absolute yaqin. When Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه heard of the Prophet’s journey to Isra'i Wal Miʿrāj, he did not hesitate or question. He declared, “If he said it, then it is true.” That is certain.  (Al-Mustadrak ala al-Sahihayn (3/62) Many today say the Shahadah with their tongues while their hearts remain unsettled, influenced by modern ideas, philosophies, or desires. Such a testimony lacks the second condition. Let's check out the mind.  Do we possess certainty that removes every shadow of doubt?  Or do we sometimes feel hesitation about parts of the message? Acceptance (al Qabul) The Third Condition of the Shahadah, we have now covered the first two conditions of the Shahadah: knowledge that removes ignorance, and certainty that erases doubt. Now we turn to the third condition. A person may know the meaning of  “Laa Ilaaha Illa Allah Muhammadur-Rasuulullah”  and be certain of its truth, yet still refuse to accept it fully in the heart. Acceptance means the heart willingly submits to the implications of the testimony. It is not enough to recognize the truth, one must adopt it completely. Allah describes the believers: “The only word of the believers when they are called to Allah and His Messenger to judge between them is that they say, ‘We hear, and we obey.’ And those are the successful ones.”  (Qur’an 24:51) The opposite of acceptance is rejection or resentment. Some people dislike certain commands or prohibitions that come with the Shahadah, even if they know them to be true. Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله said: “Whoever believes in the message with certainty but does not accept it with heart has committed kufr (disbelief) of rejection.”  (Majmūʿ al Fatāwā 7/609) An example from the time of the Prophet ﷺ is the hypocrites, who knew the truth and were certain of it outwardly, but their hearts rejected it. Their Shahadah did not benefit them. Allah says in Qur'an  63:1 "When the hypocrites come to you, they say: We bear witness that you are most surely Allah's Apostle; and Allah knows that you are most surely His Apostle, and Allah bears witness that the hypocrites are surely liars." (Surah Al-Munafiqoon) Acceptance means loving the testimony and everything it brings. Its commands, its prohibitions, and its consequences. Pause and reflect.  Do we accept every aspect of the Shahadah with an open heart?  Or do we feel resistance toward some of its requirements? Submission (al Inqiyad) The Fourth Condition of the Shahadah. Having established Knowledge, Certainty, and Acceptance, we now examine the fourth condition. Submission  means complying outwardly with what the Shahadah demands. The limbs follow what the heart has affirmed. Allah says: “And whoever submits his face to Allah while he is a doer of good has grasped the most trustworthy handhold.”  (Qur’an 31:22) Knowledge without action, certainty without obedience, and acceptance without compliance all fall short. The companions did not stop at words. When the prohibition of alcohol came, they spilled it in the streets. That is inqiyad. Shaykh Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al Wahhāb رحمه الله wrote: “Whoever perfects Tawhid will enter Paradise without reckoning.”  (Kitab at Tawhid  p.17) The meaning of the Shahadah (testify) is not complete except with submission to its rights. Many  people today pronounce the Shahadah but abandon its obligations. Prayer, honesty, lowering the gaze, and enjoying good. Such abandonment contradicts the fourth condition. Pause and reflect:  Do our actions truly submit to the Shahadah?  Or do we abandon parts of what it commands? In the next article, we will examine the fifth and remaining conditions, In Shaa Allah.  Sincerity ( al Ikhlas) that removes hypocrisy.  What happens when actions exist, but the heart seeks other than Allah?  We will address this next, In Shaa Allah.  If you have any feedback, send us an email: support@nurquest.com
