How Many Salahs Are Obligated Upon Muslims?
All praise is due to Allah. Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Final success belongs to the righteous, and there is no transgression except against the wrongdoers. As-Salaamualaikum Wa Rah'matullahi Wa Barakaat'u! Allah has made five daily prayers compulsory for every Muslim, night and day, not more, not less. This was established on the night of al Isra' wal Miʿraj, when Allah first obligated fifty prayers, then reduced them to five, while retaining the reward of fifty. (Sahih Bukhari 349, and Muslim 163) This shows both the seriousness of Salah and the mercy of Allah. The Prophet ﷺ said in a Hadith Narrated by Anas: “Allah has obligated five prayers upon His servants in a day and a night.” (Agreed upon in meaning) (Bukhari 1,458, Muslim 19, Abu Dawud 1,584, Tirmithi 625, and Ibn Majah 1,785) These five prayers are not voluntary acts of devotion; they are fixed obligations that structure the entire day of a believer. Whoever guards them has guarded his Deen, and whoever neglects them has placed his Deen at risk. Salah is not measured by sincerity claims, but by consistency. The Importance of Salah and Awakening the Desire to Perform It Salah is the first deed a servant will be questioned about on the Day of Judgment. If it is balanced, then the rest of his deeds follow. If it is corrupt, the rest collapses. Salah purifies the heart, restrains sin, and renews submission five times a day. Allah says: “Surely prayer restrains from indecency and evil.” (Qur’an 29:45) A person who stands before Allah regularly cannot remain unchanged; either Salah reforms him, or his neglect exposes a deeper sickness in the heart. Salah is not a burden placed on the believer; it is a lifeline extended to him, it is relief, grounding, and discipline. True interest in Salah grows when a person understands who he is standing before, not merely what he is performing. Upon Whom Salah Is Obligatory: Salah is obligatory upon every Muslim who has reached the age of accountability (puberty), and women after cleaning off the menstrual period or birth blood, this includes maturity, sound intellect, and Islam. But for a madman and a boy who has not reached puberty age. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said in a Hadith narrated by Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin: “There are three (persons) whose actions are not recorded: a sleeper till he awakes, an idiot till he is restored to reason, and a boy till he reaches puberty.” (Sunan Abi Dawud 4398) However, the training of Salah begins before obligation, not after, training children in it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Command your children to pray when they are seven years old, and discipline them for it when they are ten, and separate them in their beds.” (Abu Dawud 495) This hadith establishes a clear methodology. Children are not left until puberty and then suddenly burdened with prayer; they are trained gradually, consistently, and seriously. At seven, instruction begins; at ten, firmness is introduced. By maturity, Salah should already be rooted. Neglecting a child’s Salah is not mercy; it is negligence. Parents are shepherds, and Salah is among the greatest trusts placed in their care. The Times of Salah: The times of Salah are fixed by Allah and clarified by His Messenger ﷺ; they are not flexible preferences, nor cultural habits. The Prophet ﷺ said: “The time of Ẓuhr is when the sun has passed its zenith and a man’s shadow is the length of his height, so long as ʿAṣr has not come. The time of ʿAṣr is so long as the sun has not become yellow. The time of Maghrib is as long as the twilight has not disappeared. The time of ʿIshāʾ is until the middle of the night. And the time of Fajr is from the appearance of dawn until the sun rises.” (Tirmidhī 149) These times are boundaries set by Allah, guarding them is part of guarding Salah itself; delaying without excuse, or treating prayer times lightly, weakens the pillar even if the form remains. Salah is not a chapter in Islam; it is its backbone. In the coming section, In Shaa Allah, we will address the consequences of neglecting Salah, the difference between weakness and abandonment, and how Salah protects Iman from collapse.
