Give Before You Lose: The Faith, Law, and Protection Behind Zakah
All praise is due to Allah. Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Final success belongs to the righteous, and there is no transgression except against the wrongdoers. As-Salaam Alaikum Wa Rah'matullahi Wa Barakaat'u! In the previous article, we established that Zakah is the third pillar of Islam and a structural obligation. In Shaa Allah, we'll continue with four essential matters: The deeper inspiration behind Zakah The ruling on neglecting or denying it The conditions that make it obligatory It is not compulsory upon The Deeper Inspiration Behind Zakah Zakah is not a tax system; it is an act of worship tied directly to Tawheed and submission. It Trains Absolute Trust in Allah: When a believer gives 2.5 percent from accumulated wealth, he declares: Provision is from Allah. Protection is from Allah. Growth is from Allah. Allah says in Qur'an 9:71. “And (as for) the believing men and women, they are protectors of one another; they encourage goodness and prohibit evil, continue to pray, and pay the poor-rate (Zakah). (Surah At-Taubah) Allah attributes believers with giving to the poor; only those who believe will obey, and those who obey will trust. The hand releases, but the heart gains certainty. 2. It Breaks the Illusion of Ownership: Wealth feels personal. Zakah reminds you that it is entrusted. Allah says in the Qur’an 24:33, “And give them from the wealth of Allah which He has given you.” (Surah An-Noor) It is His wealth before it is yours. 3. It Shields from Severe Accountability: Wealth that is not purified becomes evidence against its owner. Abu Huraira reported that the Prophet ﷺ warned that gold and silver not purified by Zakah will be heated in the Fire and used to brand their owner on the Day of Judgment. (Sahih Muslim 987) Zakah is protection before it is lost. The Judgment on Going Against Zakah There are two distinct rulings. Denying Its Obligation : Whoever denies that Zakah is obligatory, while knowing it is part of Islam, has rejected a matter known necessarily in the religion. This constitutes disbelief. Why? Because it's one of the pillars of Islam, and an obligation, given it exactly the moment your property reaches its obligated amount, it's established clearly in the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah and agreed upon by consensus, and not giving it in the sense that condemnation can turn someone into a disbeliever. 2. Withholding It Out of Stinginess: If someone believes it is obligatory but refuses to pay out of greed: He commits a major sin. He exposes himself to severe punishment. But he does not leave Islam according to the Prophet ﷺ. Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger ﷺ as saying: “If any owner of gold or silver does not pay what is due on him, when the Day of Resurrection comes, for him, plates of fire would be struck out; they would then be heated in the Hellfire and used to cauterize his back, forehead, and sides. When these cool down, the process is repeated throughout the course of a day, running for fifty thousand years, until servants are judged, and he sees whether his way is to Paradise or to Hell”…. (The Hadith is long and covers a lot of things. (Sahih Muslim 987) In this Hadith, it is stated that whether his way is to Paradise or hell shows that he's not a disbeliever. After the death of the Prophet ﷺ, Abu Bakr As-Siddiq fought those who refused to pay Zakah, saying: “By Allah, I will fight whoever differentiates between prayer and Zakah.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1399-1400) This shows its rank; It is not negotiable worship. The Conditions for Zakah to Be Obligatory Zakah is not random; it has clear conditions. Islam : It is not accepted by a non-Muslim. Allah says in the Qur'an 9:103. “Take from their money (as) charity”. (Surah At-Taobah) Prophet ﷺ instructed Mia’dh to instruct anyone who accepted Islam that Allah has made Zakah compulsory for them from their property. (Sahih Bukhari 1395, Muslim 19) 2. Freedom: Historically, slaves did not own independent wealth; this condition is largely historical. Narrated 'Abdullah (ra) said, I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say, “If someone purchases a slave with property, the seller will be the owner of the property unless the buyer stipulates that it should belong to him." (Sahih al-Bukhari 2379) 3. Reaching the Nisab: The wealth must reach the minimum threshold defined in Shari‘a. 4. Completion of One Lunar Year: For most types of wealth, one lunar year must pass while the wealth remains above the nisab. Ibn Umar narrated that : The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Until the Hawl (a year) has passed, whoever has obtained wealth does not have Zakat on it (while it is in his possession)." (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 631 graded Authentic)) Who Is Zakah Not Compulsory Upon? Zakah is not obligatory upon: The poor who do not reach nisab Those whose wealth is below the threshold Someone overwhelmed by debts that reduce their wealth below nisab. Children and the mentally incapable, according to some scholars, have differences, though their guardians may pay from their wealth if nisab is reached. Zakah is not a burden placed on the incapable. It is taken from the wealthy and returned to the vulnerable. As the Prophet ﷺ instructed when sending Mu‘adh: “It is taken from the rich and given to the poor.” (Sahih Bukhari 1395, Muslim 19) Pause and reflect: Salah disciplines your body. Fasting disciplines your desire. Zakah disciplines your attachment. Many people fear losing money more than losing a reward. But wealth that is withheld becomes a liability. Wealth that is purified becomes protection. The believer does not ask, “How much must I give?” He asks, “How do I protect what Allah entrusted to me?” In the next article In Shaa Allah, we will explain the categories of Properties we should use for Zakah and the conditions under them.
