Belief in the Books and Messengers: The Test Most People Fail
All praise is due to Allah. Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Final success belongs to the righteous, and there is no transgression except against the wrongdoers. As-Salaam Alaikum Wa Rah’matullahi Wa Barakaatuh! A Note Before You Read: In the last article, we defined Iman and covered the first two pillars: belief in Allah and belief in the angels. Now we continue. Not just what to believe, but what that belief demands from you. The Third Pillar: Belief in the Books Allah revealed the Books. Not as history. As guidance. Allah says in Qur’an 5:44 “Indeed, We sent down the Torah, in which was guidance and light…” (Surah Al-Maeda) Qur'an 5:46 “And We sent after them in their footsteps Isa, son of Mar'yam, confirming what was before him of the Taurat, and We gave him the Injeel in which was guidance and light… (Surah Al-Maeda) Qur’an 5:48 “And We have sent down to you the Book in truth…” (Surah Al-Maeda) Qur'an 4:163 Surely We have revealed to you as We revealed to Nuh, and the prophets after him, and We revealed to Ibrahim and Ismail and Ishaq and Yaqoub and the tribes, and Isa and Ayub and Yunus and Haroun and Sulaiman, and We gave to Dawood Zabuur. (Surah An-Nisa) Qur'an 87:19 “The scriptures of Ibrahim and Musa.” (Surah Al-Ala) You believe that Allah revealed: Zabuur to Dawud ﷺ The Torah to Musa ﷺ The Injeel to Isa ﷺ The Qur’an to Muhammad ﷺ And other scriptures are not all named But belief here is not a list. It carries obligations. You believe they were originally from Allah. Free from error. But you also believe they were altered over time. Qur’an 4:46 “…they distort words from their proper places…” (Surah An-Nisa) So the final authority remains: The Qur’an. Preserved. Qur’an 15:9 “Indeed, it is We who sent down the Reminder, and indeed, We will guard it.” (Surah Al-Hijr) What does belief require? That you accept the Qur’an completely. Not partially. Not selectively. Qur’an 2:85 “Then do you believe in part of the Scripture and disbelieve in part?” (Surah Al-Baqara) That you judge by it. Not by preference. Not by culture. Qur’an 5:44 “And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed, then it is those who are the disbelievers.” (Surah Al-Maeda) That you submit to it. Even when it goes against you. Belief in the Books is not recitation alone. It is acceptance. It is a submission. The Fourth Pillar: Belief in the Messengers Allah did not leave people without guidance. He sent messengers. Bringing one message. Qur’an 16:36 “And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, [saying], ‘Worship Allah and avoid false gods.’” (Surah An-Nahl) You believe in all of them. Not some. Qur’an 2:285 “We make no distinction between any of His messengers…” (Surah Al-Baqara) From Nuh to Ibrahim. From Musa to Isa. And finally, Muhammad ﷺ. Each was sent to his people. One was sent to all mankind. Qur’an 7:158 “Say, [O Muhammad], indeed I am the Messenger of Allah to you all…” (Surah Al-Araf) Belief here is not respect alone; it requires submission. You believe they conveyed the message fully. No additions. No concealment. Qur’an 2:285 “The Messenger has conveyed what was revealed to him from his Lord…” (Surah Al-Baqara) And for the final Messenger ﷺ, belief requires following him. Not admiration without obedience. Qur’an 4:65 “But no, by your Lord, they will not believe until they make you judge…” (Surah An-Nisa) This is where many fall short. They say they believe in the Prophet ﷺ. But when his حكم (judgement) reaches them, they hesitate. They weigh it against: The scholar's opinion. Their opinion. Against society. Belief is tested there, not in statements, but in submission. What This Changes: Belief in the Books tells you where truth comes from. Belief in the Messengers tells you how that truth is lived. Without the Books, there is no guidance. Without the Messengers, there is no example. Together, they remove every excuse. Pause and Reflect: You say you believe in the Qur’an. Do you accept all of it? You say you believe in the Messenger ﷺ. Do you follow him when it is difficult? Because belief is not proven easily, it is proven when it costs you something. What remains now are the final two pillars: The Last Day. And the Divine Decree.
