Before You Leave Makkah: Mistakes in Hajj, Their Rulings, and How to Correct Them

All praise is due to Allah. Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Final success belongs to the righteous, and there is no transgression except against the wrongdoers. As-Salaam Alaikum Wa Rah'matullahi Wa Barakaat'u! In the previous article, we explained the pillars and obligations of Hajj; now, we address what happens when something is missed, common mistakes, and how they are corrected. Crowds, fatigue, and confusion during Hajj are real. Mistakes happen. What matters is knowing the ruling and the correction. Jabir reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Learn your rites (worship) from me.” (Sahih Muslim 1297) The Framework: Three Categories Every action in Hajj falls into one of three rulings: 1. Pillar (Rukn): Missing it invalidates Hajj. It must be performed. 2. Obligation (Wajib): Hajj remains valid, but a dam (sacrifice in Makkah) is required. Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنهما said: “Whoever leaves a wajib of Hajj must offer a dam.” (Muwatta’ Malik 1044) 3. Recommended Act (Sunnah) No sin if missed. When a Pillar Is Missed: These cannot be replaced by sacrifice. Missing Standing at Arafah: Abdur-Rahman bin Ya’mar reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: “The Hajj is Arafah.” (Sunan at-Tirmidhi 889, Sunan Abu Dawud 1949) If the time window is missed, Hajj does not occur. Correction: Complete Tawaf and Sa’i to exit Ihram. Perform Hajj another year. Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنهما said: “Whoever misses Arafah, let him perform Tawaf around the House and Sa'i between Safa and Marwah, and let him exit Ihram. This is in place of his Hajj, and he must make it up the following year.” Reported by al-Bayhaqi in al-Sunan al-Kubra (9590) and by Sa'eed ibn Mansur.  That's Ibn Abbas verdict. Missing Tawaf al-Ifadah: Allah says:  “And let them perform Tawaf around the Ancient House.” (Qur’an 22:29) A pilgrim who leaves without it remains partially in Ihram. Correction: Return to Makkah and perform the Tawaf. The scholars derived this from the sequence the Prophet ﷺ followed in his Farewell Pilgrimage. Jabir's detailed narration establishes that Tawaf al-Ifadah is what completes the exit from Ihram; without it, the pilgrim has not completed the act that removes the remaining Ihram restrictions. The specific restriction that remains is marital relations. The Prophet ﷺ said: “When you stone the Jamarat, everything that was forbidden to you becomes lawful except women. When you perform Tawaf of the House, everything becomes lawful.” (Sunan Abu Dawud 1999, Musnad Ahmad 26530, graded Hasan) Missing Sa’i: The Prophet ﷺ said:  “Perform Sa’i, for Allah has prescribed it for you.” (Sahih Muslim 1218) Correction: Return and complete the Sa’i. Hajj remains incomplete until it is done. That Hadith serves as evidence. When an Obligation Is Missed: Missing these requires a dam. The sacrifice is done in Makkah and distributed to the poor. Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنهما said: “Whoever leaves a wajib of Hajj must offer a dam.” (Muwatta' Malik 1044, also reported by al-Bayhaqi in al-Sunan al-Kubra) This is the foundational statement that the scholars built the ruling on. It is the athar of a companion, not a marfu' hadith, meaning it is the statement of Ibn Abbas, not directly attributed to the Prophet ﷺ. Passing the Miqat Without Ihram: Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنهما narrated: “They are for their people and for whoever passes through them.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1524, Sahih Muslim 1181) Correction: Return to the Miqat if possible, otherwise enter Ihram where you are and offer a dam. Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنهما also said: “Whoever passes the Miqat without Ihram must return to it and enter Ihram from there. If he does not return, he owes a dam.” (Reported by al-Bayhaqi in al-Sunan al-Kubra 9017, and referenced by Ibn Qudamah in al-Mughni) Leaving Arafah Before Sunset: The Prophet ﷺ remained until sunset. (Sahih Muslim 1218) The Hadith is very long; read it, and you'll learn a lot from it about Hajj Correction: A dam is required. The evidence is that Hadith. Skipping the Night at Muzdalifah: The Prophet ﷺ stayed and prayed there. (Sahih Muslim 1218) Correction: A dam is required. Missing the Nights in Mina:   The Prophet ﷺ stayed in Mina on the 11th, 12th, and 13th and performed the stoning on each day. (Sahih Muslim 1218) Scholars derived from his practice that staying is obligatory. Whoever misses a night without a valid reason owes a dam, based on the general principle of Ibn Abbas. (Muwatta' Malik 1044) Allah says: “Whoever hastens in two days, there is no sin on him.” (Qur’an 2:203) Correction: A dam is required for each missed night. Throwing Pebbles Incorrectly: The Prophet ﷺ said: “Take from me your rites.” (Sahih Muslim 1297) Correction: Repeat correctly if still possible, a dam is required. Missing a Day of Stoning: Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنهما said: “Whoever forgets a stoning or misses it, let him offer a dam.” (Muwatta’ Malik 1044) Correction: Make it up within the remaining days. If missed, a dam is required. Not Shaving or Trimming the Hair: Allah says: “And do not shave your heads until the sacrificial animal reaches its place.” (Qur’an 2:196) Correction: Perform it. If missed, a dam is required. Leaving Without Farewell Tawaf: The Prophet ﷺ said: “Let none of you leave until his last act is at the House.” (Sahih Muslim 1327) Menstruating women are exempt. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1755, Sahih Muslim 1328) Correction: If it has already left Makkah, a dam is required. Violations During Ihram: These require fidyah: Fasting for three days  Feeding six poor people  Slaughtering a sheep Derived from Qur’an 2:196. If done deliberately, fidyah and repentance are required. If done out of ignorance or forgetfulness, stop immediately and offer fidyah. Wearing Stitched Clothing (Men): The Prophet ﷺ said: “Remove the shirt.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1542) Correction: Remove it and offer fidyah. Applying Perfume After Entering Ihram: Aisha رضي الله عنها said:  “I applied perfume to the Prophet ﷺ before he entered Ihram.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1539, Sahih Muslim 1189) Correction: Wash it off and offer fidyah. Cutting Hair or Nails: Based on  “And whoever among you is ill or has an ailment of the head, then a ransom of fasting, or charity, or sacrifice.” (Qur'an 2:196), and the incident of Ka‘b ibn Ujrah.  Ka'b narrated the full account: “This verse was revealed concerning me specifically, though its ruling applies to all of you.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1814, Sahih Muslim 1201) Correction: Avoid it unless necessary. If done, fidyah is required. Mistakes in Tawaf Tawaf Without Wudu: The Prophet ﷺ said: “Tawaf around the House is prayer except that speech is allowed.” (Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 960) Correction: Renew wudu and restart Tawaf. Passing Through the Hijr: The Prophet ﷺ confirmed it is part of the Ka‘bah. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1583, Sahih Muslim 1333) Correction: Repeat that circuit. Starting From the Wrong Point: Ibn Umar رضي الله عنهما said the Prophet ﷺ began from the Black Stone. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1603) Correction: Restart the count from the correct point. Hajj is worship built with knowledge; mistakes can happen, and Islam provides corrections for them. The pilgrim who learns before travelling performs Hajj with certainty.
