Abandoning Salah: When Islam Itself Is Put at Risk
All praise is due to Allah. Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Final success belongs to the righteous, and there is no transgression except against the wrongdoers. As-Salaamualaikum Wa Rah'matullahi Wa Barakaat'u! When Salah disappears, Iman collapses. Are You at the Edge? Islam does not treat Salah lightly, and neither did the scholars of this Ummah. When the discussion moves from weakness to complete abandonment, the ruling becomes one of the most serious matters in the Deen. This issue is not emotional; it is legal, creedal, and decisive. The Ruling of One Who Abandons Salah Entirely The scholars agreed that abandoning Salah is among the gravest sins; they differed only on one matter: Does complete abandonment take a person out of Islam or not? There are two well-known scholarly positions, both severe, both rooted in evidence. First Position: Abandonment Is Major Disbelief (kufr) This is the view of the Companions and many scholars, including Ahmad ibn Hanbali, Ishaq ibn Rahawayh, and many others. They all relied on this clear evidence, narrated on the authority of Jabir, that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Between a man and shirk and kufr is the abandonment of prayer.” (Sahih Muslim 82) And he said in the narration of Abdullah bin Buraidah from his father that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The covenant between them and us and them is prayer. Whoever abandons it has committed disbelief.” (Tirmidhī 2621) This view holds that persistent, total abandonment of Salah removes a person from Islam, even if he claims belief in its obligation. Salah is not one obligation among many; it is the visible boundary of submission. Second Position: Abandonment Is Disbelief Lesser Than Kufr That Removes From Islam (sin). This is the view of scholars such as Malik and al-Shafi’i. They held that the one who abandons Salah out of laziness commits a crime worse than any other sin, but does not exit Islam unless he denies its obligation. (But that's against the Hadith, which means we won't accept the verdict) Any verdict that's not aligned with Kitaab (Qur'an) and authentic Sunnah (Hadith) will be rejected. However, even this view states that such a person is in extreme danger, subject to punishment, and close to disbelief. No scholar described this position as safe or minor. What Both Sides Agree Upon There is no difference on these points: Abandoning Salah is among the greatest of sins. It exposes a person to punishment in this life and the next. It endangers Iman and invites destruction. No excuse justifies total abandonment. The dispute is not about seriousness; it is about classification. And the safest position for the believer is not debate; it is never approaching the boundary at all. The Door Back Is Still Open No matter how far a person has fallen, the door of repentance remains open as long as the soul has not reached the throat. Allah says: “Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah.” (Qur’an 39:53) The path back is not complicated. First: Sincere repentance, regret, humility, and resolve. Second: Immediate return to Salah, not gradual, not delayed. Third: Consistency, even if imperfect. Fourth: Seeking help, learning, and structuring life around prayer times. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Islam demolishes what came before it.” (Sahih Muslim 121) Whoever returns sincerely, Allah accepts him fully; past neglect does not block future obedience. A Final Reminder Salah is not lost suddenly; it erodes, it weakens. Then it disappears, and once it disappears, everything else follows. No believer should feel safe while neglecting it. No sinner should feel hopeless while returning to it. Salah is both a warning and a mercy. In the coming articles, In Shaa Allah, we will move from ruling to rebuilding: how to safeguard Salah daily, how to revive presence in it, and how to ensure it becomes a pillar that never collapses again.
